Let me tell you a little story about the first nurse recruiting event that I attended. It was held at restaurant in downtown Atlanta. I walked in as a nurse of 2 years and new to the city. I anxiously stood alone for 2 minutes before someone came up and introduced themselves. I’d never been to a recruiting event before. I saw a group of “important looking people” from the hospital that all had drinks in their hands and were laughing out loud together. It was one of those groups that you would have felt awkward approaching as an outsider. I later found out that they were managers and charge nurses from the institution who were there to “meet & greet.” After introducing myself and checking in, one of the recruiters asked me if I’d like any wings or a cocktail from the bar. I kindly declined and then she walked me over to this circle of “important people” to introduce me to one of the managers.
The manager I spoke with was very kind, but to be honest the whole process was intimidating and awkward. We small talked for a little bit, and then an interview was set up for the following week. When I went home, I told my husband about the event and how uncomfortable I felt. I feel like they held the event in a non-clinical & relaxed environment to facilitate easy conversation, but at the end of the day, I felt it could have been so much more effective with an intentional approach. I also was miffed that they were wining and dining nurses with alcohol and chicken wings. I thought to myself, “Is that what Hospitals think woo nurses these days?”
Since that recruiting event, I’ve attended a few others and actually took part in some over the years. I’m going to be honest with you, they’re kinda all the same. A social media post sharing the event: “Let us wine and dine you with greasy food and alcohol, & then lets talk about you, potential positions, and all of the amazing benefits our institution has.” A handful of people show up because they need/want a job, and we just hope they’ll be a good fit and qualified. A few offers will be presented and maybe a few interviews set up. The event wraps up, and then HR plans the next one.

Hi there! I’m Kelsey Rowell. I’m a Registered Nurse, Certified Health Coach, and Nurse Wellness Event Coordinator! I have a passion for supporting Nurses and Leaders within this profession, and showing them how to be physically, mentally, and emotionally well. Over the past 5 years, I’ve been able to travel all over the US speaking to Nurses of all ages, collaborating with nursing companies and agencies, helping create new and innovative ways to bring the RIGHT nurses into their hands, and pouring back into those nurses in the process! While on this journey, I discovered something that resonated so deeply within my heart. It was simply that having a good institution wasn’t about bringing enough nurses on board. It was about bringing on the RIGHT nurses!
Nurses who strive to be physically and emotionally well. Nurses who both support the health of others and are an example of health to others! When we look around and see the tasks at hand during a 12 hour shift, they are anything but “easy.” Nursing today is physically and emotionally demanding. If we as nurses don’t know how to pour into and support ourselves first, we will never last in this profession! My passion isn’t just helping pour back into nurses so that they can survive this profession. My passion is pouring back into the PERSON that they are so that they can handle LIFE! It’s not just what happens in the hospital that shapes the mindset, emotions, and personality of a nurse. It’s also what happens OUTSIDE.
I relate to nurses and help equip them with positive empowered mindsets, education, knowledge, and skills to take care of their entire being! When we come into the hospital hurting, we are going to be more susceptible to hurting others. When we come into the hospital healthy and whole, we are able to effectively and appropriately respond and function to and around eachother. When we as hospitals begin to attract and support health-minded, health-centered, and wellness-seeking nurses, we begin to see a positive shift in both the Hospital and Nursing culture. This ultimately contributes to both patient and employee satisfaction, which contributes to higher retention and reimbursement.
Happy, whole, and healthy people can HELP people! They are patient. They are kind. They are intentional. They care. And THIS. THIS is what nursing is truly all about! At my Wellness Recruiting and Hiring Events, my team and I teach YOUR potential nurses how to acquire a Positive and Empowered Mindset, Yoga For Nursing, Clean Eating Tips for Nurses, I equip them with Wellness Resources Co-Branded (optional) by your institution, and they learn WHY your institution is the right fit for them! These events are fresh and so intentional. This is what this younger generation of Nurses is craving.
